Look Within…is the theme for the 2019-2020 school year. The theme is determined by National PTA, from student submissions. |
CONGRATULATIONS!
The Issaquah PTSA Council is pleased to announce that we had 3 Issaquah School District student artists win awards at the national level of Reflections.
We are so proud!
Visual Arts:”Speechless” Award of Merit Charlotte Park Middle School level Beaver Lake Middle School |
Artist Statement: “In a span of two months, two teens in my community decided to take pills. This decision cost them their lives. Teens across the country face many difficulties and some turn to drugs to numb themselves. My reflections piece looks within the vulnerable mind of a teenager who is unable to ask for help. I wanted to express that it is our responsibility as a community to reach out to those who can not speak for themselves.” . |
Photography: “Submerged in Self-Reflection”
Award of Merit
Benjamin Eskenazi
High School Level |
Artist Statement:
“Only a fraction of this photograph portrays the real woman as most of it is her reflection. All sides of her are present yet a complete image of her is absent. She is submerged so deep within her own reality it is impossible for her to see outside of it. Sometimes we look too deeply within ourselves as we block out the big picture because excessive introspection prohibits us from looking at the situation as a whole and, in turn, worsens it. The image melts reality and fiction together, preventing one from distinguishing the real imagery from the reflection.” .

Literature: “Shattered” Award of Excellence Katerina Kalinichenko Intermediate level (Grades 3-5) Challenger Elementary |
Artist Statement: “In this poem, someone is upset and trying to hide it, but when her friend looks within, she can see, and is trying to help.” . |
The Reflections Program is a National PTA and Washington State PTA cultural arts competition.
The purpose of this program is to provide an opportunity for students to use their creative talents by expressing themselves through their own original works.
Young artists get involved through their local PTA or PTSA. A student may submit an entry in any of six arts areas. Only original works of art are accepted. The six art areas are: Visual Arts Photography, Literature, Music Composition, Dance Choreography, and Film Production.

About Reflections
All children deserve opportunities to explore and be involved in the arts.
What will you create? The Arts–and the National PTA Reflection program can be a valuable tool for fostering strong partnerships in your school community. The National PTA Reflections program is PTA’s cornerstone arts program. It was developed in 1969 by Colorado’s PTA President Mary Lou Anderson to encourage students to explore their talents and express themselves. Since then, the Reflections Program has inspired millions of students to reflect on a specific theme and create original artwork. Each year, students in Grades Pre-K through 12 are recognized for bringing the theme to life through dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts.
In 2012, the Special Artist Division emerged as an optional division for students whose physical, cognitive, or mental health challenges meet ADA guidelines. More information regarding guidelines and rules will be in your Reflections Guide.
Are you a new Reflections Chair or would like some info on how to implement Reflections in your school? Follow along with your WSPTA Reflections Guide for Local PTAs (you will receive the Fall from your PTA President).
